MAY 2026
Hi Members—
A few things to share with you this month — a glaze update, an upcoming community exhibition, and gold luster firing.
SATIN MATTE WHITE, REFORMULATED
If you noticed our Satin Matte White was low for a few months, here's the history. We finally found the perfect replacement.
The new version is a response to the EPK shortage that's now reshaping the pottery world. EPK — Edgar Plastic Kaolin — is mined in a single location in Edgar, Florida, and it's been a staple ingredient in countless glaze and clay body recipes for decades. It’s a white clay powder that creates bright glazes. The mine has had ongoing operational issues over the past few years, and by late 2025 it became clear that EPK may not return to reliable supply. It’s no longer available in California. We jumped on reformulating it… but we’re perfectionists.
The new Satin Matte White uses a different type of kaolin, and the results are better than the original:
Opaque on B-mix. Finally a true white over our darker clay — no more thin spots or beige color underneath.
A subtle sparkle. A quiet shimmer that catches light without looking glittery.
A smoother finish. Softer to the touch, more uniform across curved surfaces.
This is one of the benefits of designing our glazes ourselves. When the supply chain shifts, we adapt. Studios that rely on commercial glazes are still waiting to see what happens.
COMMUNITY EXHIBITION
Our 2026 Community Exhibition opens with a reception at the studio on Saturday, June 6 from 7–9pm, curated by Theresa von Dohlen.
Theresa has been assembling this year's show all spring — we'll see work from our ongoing members that showcases the range of what's being made in the studio. Natural wine, snacks, and an evening of creative pottery. Bring a friend. The show will be up until mid-day on Sunday.
GOLD LUSTER WORKSHOP & FIRING
To prepare for our Community Exhibition, we’re doing a Gold Luster Firing on Saturday, May 30th. To join in, you need to have previously taken Ashley’s Gold Luster Workshop. There’s no fee for joining in on this firing.
Haven’t taken it before? Ashley will be teaching a Gold Luster Workshop on Friday, May 29th. Sign up here.
Pieces will be ready by Monday, June 1.
CLASS SPOTLIGHT: MOMMY & ME
Have a friend with a small one? Our Mommy & Me classes are happening this summer.
Taught by Monique, these are one-Saturday-per-month sessions where pre-school and kindergarten-age children make their own pinch pot animals — bunnies, bears, owls, whatever their imagination conjures. Parents work alongside their kids; no experience needed. We glaze and fire every piece, so each animal comes back finished and ready to live on a shelf at home.
Upcoming sessions:
Saturday, June 6 · 10am–noon
Saturday, June 27 · 10am–noon
REFER A FRIEND
The best version of this studio is the one where you have friends here. Members who refer friends who join get half off their next month's membership ($92.50 off your bi-monthly bill) — but the real reason we do this is that members with more friends in the studio tend to get more out of their practice. Bring your community in. Let Kaitlyn know after they sign up and we’ll issue your credit.
IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD: THREE BABES BAKE SHOP
If you haven't yet wandered over to Three Babes Bake Shop before or during studio time, take a look. They're less than a block away on 16th, and right now they have Banana Cream, Blackberry Crumble, and Gluten-Free Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble by the slice — a good pick-me-up during an afternoon in the studio.
Worth knowing: they close at 4:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Head over a little early if you're aiming for pie.
See you soon,
Ashley + Daniel
