Next Step Wheel: Matcha Forms: Designing a Matcha Set
In this hands-on ceramic class, you’ll create a complete matcha set that blends tradition with personal expression: a chawan (matcha bowl,) a kusenaoshi (whisk holder,) and a cup or mug designed for your unique tea ritual.
We’ll start by dipping our toes into Japanese philosophies around craftsmanship and match ware, then dive into fundamental of throwing and designing chawans— considering shape, weight, foot, rim, spout, and how form influences ch-damari (the frothing movement of matcha.) From there, we’ll bring matcha into the modern era, tailoring designs to suit your personal style and matcha preferences — whether you love a classic hot whisked matcha or prefer it iced.
Next, we’ll throw kusenaoshi to support whisk longevity and complete our set with cups that harmonize with our pieces. Finally, we’ll explore surface decoration, incorpoating techniques like shinogi (carving,) mishima (inlaid slip,) and glazing techniques, including working with tenmoku.
While Keisha is not Japanese herself, she approaches this practice with deep respect and a student’s heart, eager to share what she’s learned while encouraging each of you to explore your own creative path.
Whether your a seasoned potter or just finished your beginner class, this class is an invitation to shape, explore, and create a matcha set that is uniquely yours. Students must be able to throw a basic cylinder to take this class.
