Introduction to Handbuilding: Creating with Color

$425.00

Handbuilding is a technique to make pottery without use the wheel. This class will explore several major techniques to give you a solid foundation in working with clay.

We’ll make richly saturated colored clay from scratch, then learn techniques to incorporate into pieces. First we’ll cover the Japanese ‘nerikomi’ technique where layers of color are stacked and cut through the cross section. It yields beautiful patterns that can be manipulated or duplicated. Then we’ll move to Agateware, which is marbling colored clay. Finally, we’ll teach you how to make and use colored slip. You can paint gorgeous gradients and hues on pieces, or carve creating relief effects.

This class will teach basic handbuilding and construction techniques while using these colored techniques. We’ll look at slabs, pinching, and carving to make these forms and you’ll learn how to use the slab roller and extruder in the studio. You’ll learn a broad range of skills while working on your pieces. We’ll help you hone your creativity through group discussions and ways to look at nature, leaves, and the world around you for inspiration. Classes are led by demonstration as well as one-on-one guidance. We will use colored slip and plaster hump molds to broaden endless possibilities. You’ll learn the glazing process and will take home multiple finished pieces over 6 weeks.
