In this hands-on workshop, you’ll use the slab roller to create smooth, even sheets of clay that become the building blocks for beautiful ikebana vessels. Imagine crafting elegant shallow trays ideal for low, wide arrangements; sculptural boxes that highlight minimalist blooms; or gently curved forms that hold stems with balance and grace. Whether you like clean geometric shapes or soft organic lines, slab building lets you design vessels that perfectly complement your floral art.

This hands-on workshop is the first session in a series designed for students of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana who want to create custom ceramic vessels for their floral practice.

In this three-hour class, you’ll learn how to shape and connect slabs of clay to create your own ikebana vessel. Some slabs will be prepared in advance to help save time, allowing you to focus more on design and construction.

You’ll explore form, function, and thoughtful design in a welcoming studio space. You’ll leave with a vessel uniquely suited to your floral work. Each creation will get fired and will be ready in 3 to 4 weeks for pick up. All materials are included—from aprons to tools—and everything will be set up and ready when you arrive. Just walk in with a few design ideas and enjoy a relaxed, informative, and inspiring session.

About the instructor:

Monique began her ceramics journey in Japan, where she grew up visiting potters and kilns with her parents, both collectors. Her teaching blends cultural depth with beginner-friendly technique and a love for functional design.
