The Beauty of Electricity

$425.00

Expand your clay skills by adding a new medium: electricity and wiring. Spend 7 weeks focused on design, shadows, and casting light on silhouettes. We will begin with design discussions on form and playfulness, then layer in technical constraints of wiring and electrical components. We will not be confined to traditional table lamps with shades; imagine 8” light bulbs, milk glass casings, indirect throws, multiple light sources in one object.

This class will teach design, playfulness, and curiosity of new constraints. Ashley will work with each student as they sketch and plan their lamp, and help with throwing and handbuilding skills to achieve it. The class will have an organic quality, guided by student curiosity. Bring your inspiration!

Open to handbuilders and wheel throwers. (7 spots each.) Students should be able to make a 6” tall form in their choice of method before taking this class.

In addition to Ashley’s background in sculpture, design, and interiors, she is a licensed architect who works in construction. She has a strong understanding of electrical components and wiring principles.

This class fee includes 25lbs of clay, high quality lamp components (metal, not plastic, and braided cords with integral switches) for one complete lamp in dark bronze or black, and waived firing fees for one oversized piece. Students are encouraged to make multiple lamps, but will need to reimburse the studio for 2nd or 3rd sets of electrical components, and additional lamps larger than 10” will have $10 firing fee.
